← Back to Fire Prevention
If your clothing ever catches fire, your first instinct might be to run — but running feeds a fire more oxygen and makes it burn faster. Instead, remember three steps.
Stop
Stop immediately where you are. Do not run.
Drop
Drop to the ground, covering your face with your hands to protect your face and airway.
Roll
Roll back and forth until the flames are completely out.
Teaching kids the drill
- Practice the motion together so it becomes automatic, not something to think through in the moment.
- Explain why running is dangerous in simple terms — it makes the fire bigger.
- Remind kids to cool the burn with cool (not ice-cold) water afterward and to tell an adult right away.
